Monovision is a contact lens fitting technique that allows for a patient to see both far and near distances with contacts.  The benefit is not having to wear reading glasses over contacts.  Achieving good vision with monovision is not easy.  The choice of contacts lens material and proper contact perscription is critical.  Also important is which eye is for "distance" and which is for "reading".  Every week I see new patients who have become frustrated with their contacts.  Careful examination almost always reveals that one or more of the key elements for monovision success has not been met.

Even after the near vision declines it is still possible to wear contact lenses for comfortable vision both near and far.
